Cabrera was contracted to demolish the Building
3A DU Wing, remove deep industrial lines, demolish the 600 Yard Bullet
Catcher, excavate/remove soil contaminated with depleted uranium and lead,
and remove large concrete sumps. Per the NRC approved Decommissioning
Plan, Cabrera performed a scoping survey,
excavation of soil, and a final status survey of the area. Cabrera
completed the Scope of Work on schedule despite finding high explosive
MEC rounds contaminated with lead and depleted uranium, a condition that
threatened to halt project progress and put the site on a RCRA clock to
dispose of these wastes. In order to manage this material, Cabrera
designed, fabricated, and operated a proprietary firstof- its-kind hydro-cutting
system and demilitarized hundreds of depleted uranium and HE rounds. In
addition, Cabrera:
- Designed soil sifting procedure to separate MEC from the lead &
depleted uranium
- Obtained approval for a RCRA Temporary Authorization to treat soil
and MEC on-site
- Remediated contaminated industrial waste lines and sumps
- Excavation, rail transportation, and disposition of radioactively
contaminated soil
- Conducted MARSSIM area classification & disposition
